Causes of sore throats
Sore throats can result from various causes, including viral infections or allergies:
- Common cold: Sore throats are a common early symptom of colds caused by various viruses. Your immune system responds to these viruses by attacking them, leading to classic cold signs like cough, fever, and nasal congestion.
- Allergies: Allergies occur when your immune system overreacts to harmless substances, such as airborne dust and pollen, mistakenly identifying them as germs. This overreaction leads to the release of chemicals, including histamines, which fight allergens similarly to how your body combats cold viruses. Allergies can cause swollen nasal passages, runny nose, sneezing, cough, and a sore throat. Unlike colds, allergies are not contagious.
